The Early Years

The Early Years

Much can be achieved during a child’s formative years.  At Norfolk House we encourage their natural curiosity, exuberance and appetite to learn in order to promote academic, personal and social progression.

Our Transition class (ages 3 and 4 years) and Reception Class (ages 4 and 5 years) are led by specialist, fully qualified Early Years teachers, supported by experienced teaching assistants.  Our Early Years curriculum gently introduces children to structured forms of learning in a kind and nurturing environment.  Play is an important aspect of the curriculum, but it is purposeful play which develops confidence as well as core skills and values. Emphasis is placed on the joy of learning and discovery, and helping children to form friendships, independence and their own identity.

Phonics, literacy and Mathematics are taught in three learning groups across Transition and Reception, each led by a qualified teacher.  A child joins the the group which is best aligned to their individual needs.  This small-group approach enables children to learn at their own pace, thus ensuring that they maximise their progression.

By the time they leave Reception, our children are confident and keen leaners, fully prepared to engage with the next stage of their education.  As they progress through the school, they continue to benefit from the same child-centred focus which is the product of our small class sizes and specialist teaching:  the very hallmarks of our approach over the past 90 years.

Choosing the right school for your child is one of the most important decisions you’ll make. We’re pleased to share our parents’ and pupils’ experiences to reassure you that Norfolk House is the right home for your child.

New parent

"As parents new to Norfolk House School, the school's staff made us feel incredibly welcome and supported. The Admissions team was responsive, answered all our questions, and guided us throughout the assessment to the first day of school. Now that our children are enrolled at Norfolk House, we couldn't be happier with our decision. The school has exceeded our expectations in every way. The quality of education, the caring and dedicated teachers have created a wonderful experience for our children. We are grateful to be a part of the Norfolk House family."

New parent

"As newcomers from abroad to Birmingham, with three children, we were in search of an excellent school that could provide a warm welcome for our children while also offering the best possible opportunities for social and academic development. Therefore, we invested a considerable amount of time researching and reading reviews of schools in Birmingham and, during that process, we came across Norfolk House School.  From the reviews, we could gather that both parents and former students have described the school as having a family-like atmosphere and an excellent learning environment. After visiting the school, we had no doubts that our three children should attend there.  We are of the opinion that Norfolk House School offers children a truly distinctive experience with its close-knit atmosphere, which we consider to be an excellent starting point for learning. The handling of the admissions process has been incredibly professional and reassuring and our children have felt welcome from day one. We would like to give Norfolk House School our warmest recommendations."

Head Girl

"I absolutely love coming to Norfolk House School. I feel as if every teacher is supportive and open to helping any student with their problems about work. I feel confident approaching the 11+ exam with all the support I have had in lessons and 11+ club from every teacher. Sport is a big part of Norfolk House, whether we go to Avery Fields to play football or take part in tournaments with other schools. I am looking forward to the rest of Year 6 with the incredibly exciting opportunities on offer to us, such as Bushcraft and Enterprise."
